What Causes Tinnitus?

  • Exposure to loud sounds
  • Natural ageing process
  • Sudden impact noises
  • Injuries to the head or neck
  • Reaction to medication
  • Emotional distress

What is Tinnitus?

Often tinnitus is experienced as a ringing in the head or ears. However, it can present in a variety of sounds such as buzzing, humming, whistling, music or even the sound of the roaring ocean.

Tinnitus can be either constant or intermittent and can be experienced in either one or both ears.

For most people the sound is subjective and only they can hear it. It can vary in volume and the onset can be sudden or gradual.

Tinnitus And Hearing Loss

Approximately 90% of people with tinnitus experience some degree of hearing loss. Often people think they struggle to hear because of it, when in fact it can be due to an actual hearing loss.

Hearing aids can be helpful for many people. The more you hear, the less you notice your tinnitus. With hearing aids, your brain has other sounds to listen to making tinnitus less noticeable.

Tinnitus Treatment

Finding Relief

  • Hearing Aids – small devices for your ears that amplify sound. More sound makes your tinnitus stand out less
  • Nature sounds and music can reduce the contrast between tinnitus and quiet environments.
  • Combination hearing aids with built in sound generators that emit tinnitus relief sounds.
  • Audio Books can, for some, provide the right mix of sound, brain stimulation and comfort.

Treatment

At Hearing Choices, we can create a course of treatments that suits your needs.

The treatment goal is all about learning to live with tinnitus and controlling it, instead of allowing it to control you.
